Artificial Space
Two vocalists improvise while wearing closed headphones. A third performer, also wearing headphones,
controls processing of the two voices. The processed versions of the vocalists' sounds return to their headphones
and to a pair of speakers.

Social Topography
- Social topography refers to the distribution of power and the social relationships in a physical or conceptual space
- In my work, I try to render hidden topographies audible, visible, and flexible
- A tactic: superimposing "artificial" or created spaces on top of these physical spaces
Electronic Spaces, Media Spaces
- After Artificial Space, I began to examine the political dynamics of electronic or technological
spaces more directly — in particular the topographies of "media-technological spaces"
- Media-Technological Spaces are
- the overlapping physical and powerful footprints of different media technology networks
- Radio, television, telephony, telegraphy, the Internet
- Different types of networks, wired, wireless, satellite
- Each of these spaces has its own unique social topography.
Mapping the 2004 U.S. Presidential Campaigns
- In the aftermath of the U.S. Presidential Election last Fall, I explored how the two major Presidential campaigns
employed different strategies, media campaigns, organizations, and individuals in the election
- My installation, Victory/Concession was a response to the omnipresent yet deceptive mappings of the
election that emerged after November 2.
Mapping Information
- Mapping the power dynamics of electronic or media-technology spaces through data analysis
- "Perspectival" approach to data analysis
Mapping Radio Formats
- A new project documenting Troy FM radio through text and audioblogging: Metaradio > Troy
- Prototype online at metaradio.silversand.org
Metaradio > Troy
- Radio formats as a map
- Radio ownership as a map
- Alternatives to demographic analysis
- Metaradio > Troy superimposes these information sources to explore how radio works as a mapping of Troy
Demographics != Radio Formats
- The sources don't match up
- (Troy) radio
- Nuanced radio formats
- Listeners doing particular activities
- With particular values, worldviews
- Even in particular moods
- Not just a demographic, but an identity
Marketing Identity
- Rather than attempting to represent Troy's population, commercial radio stations mine Troy's population for
listeners they can serve up to their advertisers
- Pulse 96.7
- Contemporary Christian music station
- On-air requests for "responsible," "trustworthy" advertisers
- Advertisers are buying the sense of values listeners associate with the music, and station's attitude
Developing Metaradio > Troy
- GPS — locating audio posts
- Cartographic interface
Future Directions
- Comparing communication networks' social topographies
- Mapping information from automated sources
