About the Project
Azariah: Whom Jehovah Helps tells the story of a young man's encounters with mysterious prophets as he attempts to reconstruct his belief system after the disintegration of a religious sect to which he belonged. An interdisciplinary project, Azariah, draws together poetry, composition, book arts, performance, and installation. The first phase of the project, my MFA Thesis at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's iEAR Program, culminated in a participatory shape note singing at the Old Songs Community Art Center in Voorheesville, NY, in March 2006.
I am now planning a tour with a revised version of the Azariah singing. I am also working to realize installed expressions of the narrative at the root of the project. In the fall of 2006 I built a prototype for an outdoor interactive sound installation utilizing radio transmissions during an AIRtime residency at Free103Point9's Wave Farm in Acra, NY. I am hoping to present an installation of Azariah during the summer of 2007.
