About Jesse:

I have been composing music in the style of the Sacred Harp since 2003. I have learned about writing music from Raymond C. Hamrick, Richard DeLong, and Neely Bruce as well as from my fellow tune writers from the Northeastern United States: Aldo Ceresa, Allison Schofield, Gregory Mulkern, Lauren Bock, and Justin Levi, among others.

The Sacred Harp itself, and the experience of singing from it, have been major forces shaping my approach to tune-writing. I am particularly fond of the tunes in our book by Stephen Jenks, William Walker, E. J. King, J. P. Reese, Sarah Lancaster, T. J. Denson, A. M. Cagle, and Raymond C. Hamrick.

Along with Aldo Ceresa, Allison Schofield, and other singer-composers, I’ve helped organize gatherings where composers active in the Sacred Harp tradition meet to sing and discuss each others music in the context of trying to better understand this tradition. Since 2006, I've attended and helped organize such gatherings at singings in Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

I would appreciate any feedback about these tunes. Please feel free to e-mail me at jesse@silversand.org.
